How to Clean the Inside of Your Windshield Without Streaks

Interior haze can become obvious when sunlight or headlights hit the glass. Here’s how to remove that film, reach the bottom edge and check your work.

The quick answer

Park in the shade and let the glass cool. Lightly mist a clean glass towel with a suitable automotive glass cleaner, wipe a small section, then immediately finish with a second, dry towel. Change towel faces often and repeat with fresh towels if oily haze remains.

What you need Five cleaning steps Streak fixes FAQs

Why does the inside of a windshield get hazy?

Interior glass collects fingerprints, dust and airborne residue. Materials inside the cabin can also release compounds that contribute to a film on the glass. Overspray from dashboard products adds another possible source of smears.

As Invisible Glass explains in its interior glass guide, this contamination differs from the road grime on the outside. Check both surfaces before repeating an interior cleaning pass.

What you need

  • Automotive glass cleaner suitable for your glass and any installed window film. Follow the product label and your vehicle or film manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Two or three clean glass microfiber towels. Low-pile or waffle-weave cloths work well: one for cleaning, one for drying and a spare for stubborn film.
  • An optional windshield cleaning tool with a clean microfiber pad for the narrow area above the dashboard.

Keep glass towels separate from cloths used for wax, polish or interior dressing. Skip fabric softener when washing them; residue can transfer back onto the windshield. See the manufacturer’s microfiber and paper towel comparison for towel-care guidance.

How to clean inside windshield glass: five steps

  1. Park safely and let the glass cool

Work while the vehicle is parked. Move out of direct sunlight and wait if the windshield feels hot. Cleaner can dry too quickly on warm glass, leaving residue before you finish wiping.

Remove loose objects from the dashboard and adjust your seat for comfortable access. Follow the cleaner’s ventilation instructions.

  2. Apply cleaner to the towel

Fold your cleaning towel into quarters to create several clean faces. Lightly mist one face so it is damp, not dripping. Applying cleaner to the towel helps keep overspray off the dashboard, displays and vents.

Avoid saturating the towel. More liquid means more product to remove.

  3. Clean one section at a time

Start with one half of the windshield and work in smaller sections if necessary. Use overlapping, straight passes with gentle pressure. Include the corners and bottom edge where film is easy to miss.

Switch to a fresh towel face as it becomes dirty. Use a microfiber reach tool if needed; keep its hard edges away from the glass and trim.

  4. Finish immediately with a dry towel

Before the section dries on its own, wipe it with your second, clean towel. Turn that towel frequently and replace it if it becomes damp or starts smearing.

If haze persists, repeat a light cleaning pass with fresh towels. Reusing an oily cloth can redistribute the film.

  5. Inspect from different angles

Once the glass is dry, look across it from the driver’s and passenger’s seats. Check the lower corners and the area around the mirror without pulling on covers or wiring.

If marks remain, confirm which side they are on. As a practical tracing trick, use vertical finishing strokes inside and horizontal strokes outside so leftover streaks are easier to locate.

The small-section, two-towel approach is consistent with Invisible Glass’s cleaner-residue guidance.

Watch the area around cameras and sensors. Clean only accessible glass. Do not remove housings or push a tool behind them. For example, Tesla’s Model 3 cleaning instructions direct owners to arrange service for glass inside the front camera enclosure. Check your own vehicle’s manual for its requirements.

Still seeing streaks? Check these causes

What you seeWhat to try
Smears that move as you wipeReplace the cleaning and finishing towels. They may be carrying oil or product residue.
Haze after the cleaner driesUse less product, work on cooler glass and finish each smaller section immediately.
Lint left on the glassSwitch to a clean, low-lint microfiber towel intended for glass.
Marks that never changeInspect the outside surface. Scratches, chips or film damage need assessment rather than harder scrubbing.

Frequently asked questions

Is windshield fog the same as oily haze?

No. Fog is condensation: moisture collects on cooler glass. Oily haze is a surface film that remains after moisture clears. Cleaning removes residue, but recurring condensation also calls for moisture control and the vehicle’s defogging settings. Follow your owner’s manual and address wet mats or leaks. Invisible Glass’s anti-fog guide explains the distinction. Do not drive until visibility is clear.

Can I use paper towels?

They may leave lint and can make the final finish harder to inspect. A clean glass microfiber towel is the more practical choice, especially for the dry finishing pass.

What if my windshield has tint or another film?

Use the film manufacturer’s approved cleaner and method. For newly installed film, follow the installer’s curing and cleaning instructions. Avoid abrasive pads, blades and hard tool edges. Do not assume that a cleaner suitable for bare glass is suitable for every film.

How often should I clean the inside?

Check it during regular car cleaning and clean it whenever film, fingerprints or streaks affect visibility. There is no single interval for every vehicle. Keeping dusty surfaces clean and controlling interior-product overspray can help reduce repeated contamination.
