That can include multiple paint layers rather than giving an isolated
measurement of the clear coat alone.
For this reason, a reading such as 120 microns should not
automatically be interpreted as 120 microns of clear coat.
Paint-thickness readings are still extremely useful. A detailer can
compare measurements across panels and look for unusual variations that
may suggest previous refinishing, repairs or areas requiring additional
caution.
Measurements should be considered together with visual inspection,
vehicle history and a test spot.
Why a Test Spot Matters Before Paint Correction
One of the most important parts of professional paint correction happens
before the entire vehicle is polished.
A small test area allows the technician to determine how the paint
responds to a particular combination of machine, pad and abrasive.
For example, if a relatively mild combination produces excellent defect

When performed correctly and conservatively, paint correction can safely
improve the appearance of suitable automotive paint.
